The pursuit of new project management efficiency for mining projects at Southern Peru Copper Corporation was driven by sheer scale. SPCC’s Plant Engineering team manages up to 300 projects per year, including mining infrastructure, maintenance, engineering development and local community initiatives. SPCC has been processing copper and other metals in Peru since 1960.
Improving project management efficiency
Managing and co-ordinating this vast range of activities requires the highest level of mining project management efficiency, and the company turned to Elecosoft for help to create a pilot project management model for the company.
Carlos Noriega, Plant Engineering manager recognised the need for a more consistent approach, coupled with a cost-effective configuration: “We considered several alternatives before choosing Powerproject. With Powerproject, the database stays within our own IT system. Plus, the flexible license options allow us to share the software among our workstations and teams without purchasing lots more licences.”
The pilot project was so successful that it was decided to extend the use of Powerproject to the Cuajone and Toquepala immediately, to span the entire portfolio of mining projects.
Mining projects are typically measured by their physical progress. Previous reporting involved loading all the resources and costs separately for individual projects. Using Powerproject, the team has been able to standardise task weightings create Task Pools enabling them to create templates. The Plant Engineering coordinators are now able to report physical S curves directly out of Powerproject without manually loading information into a spreadsheet each time.
Carlos believes that SPCC is gaining clear business benefits through improved project management efficiency from the switch to Powerproject.
Carlos Noriega, SPCC
For the first time, we can see and review all our projects, and monitor the progress of them all. We now have better communications between our departments, our co-ordinators, and with our contractors. The critical path is now very well outlined with Powerproject, so we see the impact any issues have on expenses and can easily check with contractors about the impact on time
Looking down the track
The transition to Powerproject is continuing, along with the extension of the new Business Intelligence platform which will give the management significantly better visibility of all types of project information. Meanwhile SPCC is proactively working with all its many contractors, to evangelise and promote the benefits of the change, with Elecosoft’s local partner Metacontrol supporting them every step of the way.
